💡 Our Recommendation
Telus PureFibre, specifically because of symmetrical upload and download speeds. This matters more than most people realize.
Why Symmetrical Speeds Matter
Most cable internet (Shaw/Rogers) offers asymmetrical speeds - fast download, slow upload. Telus fiber offers the same speed both ways.
📥 Cable (Shaw/Rogers)
1000 / 200 Mbps
Fast download, slow upload
🌐 Telus Fiber
1000 / 1000 Mbps
Same speed both ways
When Does Upload Speed Matter?
Video Calls
Zoom, Teams, and FaceTime rely heavily on upload speed for your outgoing video
Cloud Backups
Uploading photos, videos, and files to iCloud, Google Drive, or Backblaze
Streaming & Gaming
Twitch streaming, cloud gaming uploads, and screen sharing
Security Cameras
If you view cameras remotely, footage uploads from your home
Working from Home
Uploading large files, VPN connections, remote desktop
Smart Home
Remote access to Home Assistant, NAS, or UniFi systems
Other Considerations
✅ Fiber is More Reliable
Fiber optic cables are immune to electrical interference and don't degrade in wet conditions like copper coax. Fewer outages, more consistent speeds.
🔧 You Can Use Your Own Router
Telus fiber works with your own equipment. We typically install UniFi routers in bridge mode behind the Telus ONT for the best experience.
⚠️ Check Availability First
Not all areas have Telus fiber. Newer developments usually have it, but some older neighborhoods are still on copper DSL (which is much slower).
Budget-Conscious Options
If Telus fiber isn't available or is too expensive, resellers like TekSavvy, Lightspeed, and Can-Com offer the same Shaw/Telus infrastructure at lower prices.
You get the same connection quality but with less customer support overhead baked into the price.
What We Use
We personally use Telus 3 Gbps fiber, connected to a UniFi Dream Machine Pro for routing. The combination of symmetrical speeds + UniFi's traffic management gives us excellent performance for remote work, video calls, and running local services.
